While early explorers relied on surface signs like natural oil seeps, today’s exploration is driven by sophisticated geological surveys and technology—ranging from subsoil testing for onshore exploration to seismic imaging techniques for offshore sites.
Our Gas Processing Plants achieved remarkable output in 2020, processing 411 and 406 million cubic meters of gas, respectively. This included the production of 395 million cubic meters of dry stripped gas, 756,000 tonnes of light hydrocarbon fractions, 188,000 tonnes of ethane, and 42,000 tonnes of sulfur.
Our exploration efforts focus on expanding the resource base through advanced techniques and strategic selection of promising areas based on comprehensive research. By implementing cutting-edge technology for seismic data processing and interpretation, we enhance the success rate of exploration drilling. Innovative approaches, such as accounting for inhomogeneities in the upper column layers, help reduce forecast errors and improve accuracy in identifying structures.
With extensive operational expertise, we minimize risks and accelerate project timelines for new field developments. Our proximity to export markets and dedicated transportation infrastructure significantly reduces costs, enhancing operational efficiency in targeted exploration regions. During the design phase, we employ finite-difference modeling of wave fields to optimize seismic survey parameters, ensuring precise and cost-effective exploration.
Modern oil and gas exploration leverages advanced scientific and technological methods to identify potential drilling and extraction sites. While early explorers relied on natural oil seeps as indicators, today's techniques include detailed geological surveys, onshore subsoil testing, and offshore seismic imaging, greatly increasing exploration efficiency and accuracy.
PETRO ATK, LLP actively exports crude oil and petroleum products across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and North America. In 2018, our exports totaled 21.34 million tons—a 17.4% increase over the previous year. Geographic diversification is a key strategic priority for us. In 2020, we expanded exports to North Africa, and in 2019, we achieved a significant milestone by contributing to Kazakhstan's record production of 560.3 million tons. Additionally, on December 24, 2019, we marked the production of our 2.5 billionth ton of liquids. Total liquids production reached 4.67 million barrels per day (230.2 million tons annually), accounting for 81% of our total hydrocarbons output.
Development drilling is a crucial component of PETRO ATK, LLP's production strategy, contributing over 8% to our oil and condensate output. In 2019, we commissioned 2.9 thousand new wells, 57% of which utilized horizontal completion techniques. Among these, 986 wells featured multi-stage fracturing, raising their share to 34%. Horizontal wells saw an 11% production increase compared to 2018, averaging around 9,000 tons per well in the first production year—2.4 times higher than that of directional wells. Advanced planning, drilling, and technology application secured an average flow rate of 44.8 tons per day at new wells, with an incremental 19.6 million tons produced in 2019. In addition to drilling in new zones, infill drilling is performed to enhance reserve recovery efficiency.
PETRO ATK, LLP manages a balanced commodity flow that includes production, refining, purchases, and sales of oil and gas products. Our downstream operations engage in the refining and chemical processing of crude oil into usable products like gasoline, fuel oils, and various petrochemicals, primarily for transportation fuel. We refine these products at our own and third-party facilities, ensuring a steady supply to meet market demand. This segment also involves transporting and marketing refined products, aligning our supply chain from production to end-user distribution.
